Audi has reversed its 2023 decision to introduce a new nomenclature system where even-numbered model names were to denote electric vehicles (EVs), while odd-numbered models would be reserved for combustion-engine vehicles.

This new naming convention was short-lived, with only the A5, launched in 2024, following the system as planned. The scheme will be discarded with the upcoming 2025 model lineup, including the new A6, which will retain its traditional naming.

Markus Duesmann, Audi’s former CEO, had introduced the idea in 2023, stating, “In the future, it will be like this: The odd numbers will be the combustion engines, and the even numbers will stand for the battery-electric vehicles.”

He also mentioned that the A4 would be replaced by the A5, and the A6 by the A7, with the A4 and A6 models transitioning to electric. However, the new approach faced resistance from customers and dealers. As Marco Schubert, Audi’s Member of the Board for Sales and Marketing, explained, “Our nomenclature now provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive orientation in our portfolio.”

Under the revised system, Audi will return to using model names based on size and positioning rather than the powertrain type. The brand will continue to use the established powertrain codes such as “e-tron” for electric models and “TFSI” for combustion-engine variants. Despite scrapping the odd/even number approach, the iconic “e-tron” suffix is expected to persist, ensuring clear differentiation between electric and traditional powertrains. Audi has also clarified that there will be no retroactive changes to model names already in circulation, meaning the A5 will not revert to its original A4 designation.

The A6, which was originally intended to adopt the A7 name under the new scheme, will instead follow the traditional naming convention. Audi plans to unveil the new A6 with a combustion engine on March 4, 2025, marking the first model under the revised system.

As Schubert noted, “The necessary differentiation between models and variants in the portfolio is done using the body style (e.g., Avant, Sedan, or Sportback) and the – already established – powertrain code (e.g., e-tron, TFSI e, TFSI, or TDI).” This move ensures that the company’s lineup remains clear and easily understood by its global customer base.

Whoa, that was fast! Audi's already giving up on that whole odd/even number thing for electric and gas cars? Barely lasted, right? Remember when they were saying odd numbers were gas and evens were electric? That A5's gonna be a rare bird now, the only one following that rule. Funny how they thought it was "intuitive," but everyone was scratching their heads. Good on them for admitting it was a flop and going back to the old system. "e-tron" and "TFSI" still make sense, at least you know what's under the hood. So, gas-powered A6 in 2025? Interesting. Sticking with Sedan, Avant, Sportback, and those engine codes is probably the easiest way to keep things clear, especially with all the electric and hybrid stuff out there now.
